Cara Cara Old Fashioned

Recipe by Hopson Grace

Bartender and bourbon aficionado James Pepper invented the Old Fashioned at his Kentucky private club, but this now iconic cocktail was put on the map when the aristocrat introduced it to the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel bar in 1880s New York.  A classic cocktail in the truest sense of the term, an Old Fashioned is made by mixing sugar with bitters and adding bourbon or whiskey. Named after the glass it was served in, the result is rich and silky with notes of spice and vanilla. We added a touch of freshly squeezed orange juice for a tangy upgrade, and defer to the Cara Cara orange because we love its dark red hue and the fact that it's seedless.

Makes 2 drinks

Ingredients

  • 3 oz bourbon or whiskey

  • 4 oz freshly squeezed Cara Cara orange juice

  • 4-6 dashes Angostura bitters

  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup

  • Rosemary for garnish

Instructions

  • Place bourbon, bitters, juice and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker to gently combine. Place ice in a tumbler or classic whisky glass, pour and garnish with rosemary and orange zest.
